Feasting on Words: 7 Thanksgiving Figurative Language Activities

Thanksgiving figurative language activities

Exploring figurative language is one of my favorite classroom activities, diving into the creative ways that authors skillfully play with words and phrases and enhance their descriptions, revealing to students how these imaginative elements transform mundane descriptions into vibrant, captivating narratives. And this Thanksgiving season I'm cooking up some creative ways to infuse some figurative language into the holiday celebrations! Here are 7 engaging Thanksgiving-themed figurative language activities that will get your students excited about playing with language.

Thanksgiving Figurative Language Activities

1) Turkey Metaphors: Feathered Expressions

Provide students with a list of turkey-related words (feathers, gobble, drumstick), and ask them to come up with similes and metaphors using these words.

For instance, "The turkey drumstick was the flavorful baton for the Thanksgiving orchestra, conducting a savory symphony on the palate."

This activity lets students flex their creative muscles and link turkeys to a number of different concepts.

2) Figurative Language in Thanksgiving Poems: A Poetic Feast

Provide students with short Thanksgiving-themed poems and ask them to identify and explain the use of metaphors, similes, and personification in the text. Poems offer a compact and evocative canvas for figurative language, making this a rewarding challenge.

Here's a fun Thanksgiving poem with some great figurative language examples (think biting and stinging wind and a simile or two!) and it's in the public domain--happy free using friends!

3) Thanksgiving Simile Search: Comparing the Bounty

Give students a list of Thanksgiving-related similes and ask students to analyze the similes. What is being compared? Why is the use of this simile better than a more literal sentence? (Short on time? Here's the no-prep worksheet for this activity that I use!)

For example, "Family gatherings are like a warm, cozy blanket." This compares family gatherings to the comfort of a cozy blanket. It creates a vivid mental image with the description of the warm, cozy blanket, while conjuring a sense of comfort and togetherness. It taps into our emotions and makes the description more engaging and relatable.

Similes help students draw parallels between the familiar and the festive.

4) Figurative Language Story: Thanksgiving Narratives

Have students write a short story or paragraph about a Thanksgiving scene, incorporating metaphors, similes, and personification. This creative exercise allows students to bring Thanksgiving to life through their writing.

5) Thanksgiving Idioms: Unpacking Expressions

Introduce common Thanksgiving idioms and ask students to explain their meanings and create sentences using these idiomatic expressions. Understanding idioms is a fun way to delve into cultural nuances. (Here's a fun read explaining some common Thanksgiving themed idioms.)

6) Turkey Symbolism: The Language of Tradition

Discuss the symbolism of the turkey in Thanksgiving and ask students to write about what the turkey represents in figurative terms. This activity encourages students to think deeply about the holiday's traditions.

7) Create a Figurative Language Menu: A Feast for the Imagination

Have students create a Thanksgiving menu using figurative language for each dish. For example, "Grandma's mashed potatoes: A cloud of fluffy goodness." This final activity combines the joy of food with the richness of figurative language.
